LEC 3 Minute Update – March 10, 2022

Mornin', all! I'm Jake Brown, and this is your 3 minute update from Chardon, OH! It's the county seat of Geauga County, is home to the Geauga County Maple Festival, and has a sister city, Johnstown, OH.

This week on the 3 minute update, we have: a Training Survey link, S'More Cub Scout Adventures, camp staff job openings, this year's Spring campaign, the upcoming BALOO, SM Basic, ILST, and Camp Host Trainings, Camperships, Roundtables, Scout Shop Sales, this week's pro tip, and this week's fun fact!

The Lake Erie Council will be hosting a training summit in November, and is seeking feedback for sessions in that course. Please take a moment to fill out this survey if you are a registered leader in a Pack, Troop, or Crew.

Calling all law Enforcement Exploring Posts: in case you didn't know, the Heart of Ohio Exploring Competition will be April 22nd in Galena, OH. The deadline to register is April 18th, contact Amy.Heller@scouting.org with questions.

Throughout April and May we have Camporee, Tough Cubber, Trailblazer, and other programs for Scouts in Packs, Troops, or Crews to attend throughout April and May. Friendly reminder to Troops and Crews: staffing these events is a great way to get positive exposure to Scouts in the program below yours, and can be a highly effective recruiting tool! Get in touch with the event chairs if you'd like to volunteer as staff!

And S'more Cub Scout Adventures are coming to you, Cub Scout families, this summer at Firelands Scout Reservation! Scouts will get the chance to earn adventure loops, have fun with their families at camp, and enjoy the fellowship and friendship of getting to know other Scouts from across the Council and beyond. A friendly reminder that campership applications are due this April for those looking to attend our summer programs and need a little help in getting there. You can find the applications at this link on our website. The deadline for SBSA Resident Camp and S'More Cub Scout Adventures is April 5th, the deadline for NYLT is April 15th, and the deadline for Wood Badge is June 1st. Oh, haha, ah I love that one! Say, speakign of bees, it's time to get bee-zy with adventure this Spring! That's right, Spring is a great time to start getting outside, getting more physically active in Scouting, and being more present out and about in your community. And to help with that, we've got some initiatives you should put on your Scouting calendar:

In April, end your hive-ernation with a hike on Earth Day Weekend! In May, join the worldwide movement of Scouts for trash-the-trash day on May 7th. You can register here! You can also get in touch with your local YMCA for Scout Swim Day on May 14th. Locations are confirmed at Lakewood, Ashtabula, Hillcrest, French Creek, Geauga, West Park, and North Royalton, with more to come! Lastly, June 18th and 19th are free fishing days in Ohio: that means no one needs a fishing license to go fishing as a family in public fishing holes!

So make plans, spread the word, and invite as many friends as you have to join your Scouting adventures with these BEE-autiful outdoor outing opportunities.

LEC 3 Minute Update – February 24, 2022,

Mornin', all! This is Jake Brown with the 3 minute update, and I'm not going to lie, this one's a little dense, folks, so be prepared.

While I'm physically being filmed at our office in Cleveland, my heart, as with everyone else, I assume, is in Ukraine this morning. More to come on that in just a moment, but let's now focus now on everything you need to know this week:

In order to run a BB or archery range, including the inflatable ranges we have available to rent from the Council, someone from your unit must be Rangemaster certified. There will be a training for Rangemaster and Archery level 1 training at Beaumont on April 2nd. Register online, and contact Julia. Hearne@scouting.org with any questions.

Training is a key component of successful delivery of the Scouting program. Should you have any questions about leader position specific training, how to get trained in your position, or who to contact about scheduling training for your position, please contact Michelle.Cali@scouting.org.

For outdoor, overnight outings in Cub Scouts, BALOO is a required training! And SM Basic Training is required at the troop level. The first of 3 rounds of those trainings offered this year are coming up in April: check the calendar and contact Rebecca Setty for BALOO questions (rebecca.setty@gmail.com) and Pat O'Leary with SM Basic questions (phobsa@att.net).

For youth leaders in the SBSA program, training in their positions is delivered in ILST. At this time, there is one ILST training session on the calendar, although we hope the interest is there to provide more! In any case, that training for youth will be held at Beaumont on May 21st. Register online! Contact Dave Sechnick (davesechnick@aol.com) with any questions. Please note ILST is a pre-requisite to attend NYLT.

Speaking of, NYLT is a premiere youth leadership training offered by Scouting for youth members in the SBSA program. This training will be held at Firelands June 12-17. Register online, and contact John Z (johnz3@zfolks.com) if you have any questions.

Following up with that, Wood Badge is the NYLT equivalent for adult leaders. Wood Badge is an opportunity to learn a little more about how to see your vision through to reality in Scouting and beyond, be it having more organization as a Troop, a more engaging program for your Pack, or a succession plan you can count on. Just a few examples of things Wood Badge can help you achieve. The course is at Firelands from July 29-31, and August 13-14. Register online and contact Joel Bussman (joelbussman@gmail.com) with questions.

Moving from training into just plain fun, there are some dates you should know about: April 22-24 is the Beaumont Spring Camporee. Webelos are welcome to join that Saturday and Sunday as well for the Webelos Spring Challenge. Contact Anthony.Dworning@scouting.org for more info, and sign up today!

May 6-7 is the Tough Cubber weekend at Firelands, followed by May 13-15 at Beaumont. Contact Rob Boehm for questions about this event (rboehmfam@gmail.com).

And in Scouts BSA, the recipients are: Bill Belew, Genny Espinoza, Desarae Kleckner, and Sherry Rasmusen. Please join us in congratulating these folks on a well-deserved award for their service to Scouting however you can!

And lastly, here is this week's training segment, brought to you by Wear Your Scouting Uniform Day. This year, as with every year, anyone, youth and adults are welcome and encouraged to wear their uniforms this coming Tuesday, February 8th. I understand this may leave some confusion about what to do, so allow me to break it down.

Anyone who has a uniform should wear their uniform as fully as their uniform can be worn on Tuesday, February 8th. The steps to completing participation in Wear Your Uniform Day are as follows:

Step 1. Get your uniform into your hands.

Step 2. Remove any non-clothing items from your uniform that may exist, including but not limited to a hanger.

Step 3. Prepare your uniform for placement on your body, including but not unlimited to unbuttoning your uniform.

Step 4. Place your uniform on the appropriate part of your body, including but not limited to your torso.

Step 5. Fasten your uniform to your body, including but not limited to re-buttoning your uniform.

Step 6. Do everything you were already going to do on Tuesday, February 8th, in your uniform.

Step 7. Take a picture of yourself in your uniform on Tuesday, and email it to Jacob.brown@scouting.org with a brief explanation of where you were and what you were doing.

Don't have a full uniform? Wear a Scouting-related shirt, jacket, belt, hat, or any combination thereof instead. Represent Scouting while wearing a less uniform uniform. After all, some uniform is better than no uniform when you're trying to be uniform.

Hello, Lake Erie Council, I'm Jake Brown, and I gotta tell ya: it feels fantastic to say goodbye to 2021! It was real, it was fun, and it's done. We hope you had a great time over the holiday spent with family and friends, and we welcome you back to what I hope is your favorite part of your week in Scouting: the 3-minute update. So you've got an Eagle Scout who has completed their Board of Review. That's it, they're now done and considered Eagles, right? Not so fast. The system won't recognize them as such until we receive the Eagle Scout application. This can be dropped off, or mailed to our office at PO Box 93388, Cleveland, OH, 44101.

 And lastly, here's this week's fun fact: what happened after an iPhone and a firework were arrested on New Year's Eve? One was charged, but the other was let off!

LEC 3 Minute Update – November 21, 2021

Santa! Santa! Oh, why hello Lake Erie Council! Good thing I found you this week! I can't say the same for Santa yet, but there's still time!

Well, since we're here, let me give you the low-down for this week:

We're talking recharter, upcoming camp events, Scout Shop hours and quiet time at the office, and a special note about Pete Biltz.

            First, recharter. No matter what your situation is with your Chartered Organization, we expect your roster to be fully paid and submitted by December 10th. Special circumstances can be addressed outside of roster renewal. Please make sure you get in touch with myself or Michelle Cali if you have any recharter questions at all, relating to the roster or your Chartered Organization.

            Also, as a friendly reminder, there will be an open help session at the North Olmstead Library from 6:30-8:30 p.m. this evening. Please feel free to attend with questions, and also feel free to tune into this zoom link if you can't make the drive, but would still like some assistance.

            Holidays at Camp is upon us! And truth be told, I think this is the best bet I have of finding Santa! Scouts will enjoy wreath-making, gingerbread house building, nutstacking, and much more! Holidays at Camp happens at Firelands on December 3rd and 10th.

            The office will be closed, and LEC staff will have quiet time next week. Remember the only way to get in touch with someone will be through the lecmembercare@scouting.org, and that's for the most urgent of Scouting emergencies only.

            That said, the Scout Shops at Firelands and Cleveland will be open during that week! Please them out on Facebook to see when you can still stop in and take care of any necessary purchases.

            Giving Tuesday is next week, and the gift of Scouting is the best gift of all! Donations can be made at this link! Send Anastasia your questions.

            Lastly, I need to take a moment and honor Pete Biltz, who has spent the last 30 years of his life supporting the Scouting movement as a professional, and will be retiring at the end of this week. I've known Pete as a development guru, spearheading fundraisers for this Council, including the Great Scout Luncheon. Pete has always been good for a laugh, and for taking the time to get to know many, many Scouters along his journey. Pete, I just have to say, we wish you the very best retirement, and you'll be deeply missed.

            And even though we'll be losing a great colleague in Pete Biltz, don't be sad, because I'm still set on finding Santa! So tune in the week after next, and wish me luck on this journey! Alrighty, Santa! Santa! Hey, Dworning, I'm looking for Santa, you seen him around? Santa!
